Groups
Groups is a feature on GolfInvestors which allows you to compete with a select number of people, including your friends. Groups on GolfInvestors are equivilant to Fantasy Leagues on other fantasy releated sites.
Managing a group allows you the opportunity to limit the rankings, discussions, and prizes amongst a selected number of investors (i.e. friends, office colleagues, etc.) while still taking advantage of the liquidity of the entire stock market which the group is associated with. It is thought that competing is a personal thing. So when you know who you are competing against you will take more interest in the competition that is taking place.
Each group is associated with a market which all investors on the site can trade on. This means you can buy and sell with all the investors that are trading on the selected market. However, you will only be ranked based upon your NAV (net asset value) of your portfolio for the market against the members of the group. With each group being able to set its own prize structure, this can allow you to be ranked amongst the members of the group rather than the entire pool of investors on the site. Therefore, you will be able to boost that you meant Sally in the office next to, or your brother that is half-way across the country.
A group also allows you to have private discussion forums which only the members of the group can post messages in and read what other investors are saying.
If you want to go further than just being a member of a group you can also select to create your own group and invite members in it. As a creator of a group, you then have the responsibility to manage the membership, the prizes, and the discussion forums associated with that group.
Acting as the Group Owner you are in control of the type of membership (public, private, invitation only) to select who can become members, as well as selecting which stock market a group is associated with. Not to mention the ability to manage the prize pool for your group. To be able to communicate amongst the members through discussion forums is also an important dynamic of groups.
